Instituto de Ciencias Sociais (ICS) at the University of Lisbon is an Associated State Laboratory, and a leading research institution in Portugal. Currently the Institute has about 80 researchers and 150 postgraduate students and is engaged in about 100 research projects.

ICS is involved in various in international projects, including FP7 funded projects, and is the Portuguese representative in the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP), the European Social Survey (ESS) and the European Social Values Survey (EVS). ICS is also home to the Institute of Ageing, a research centre on ageing issues coordinated by Professor Manuel Villaverde Cabral.

Main tasks attributed to them in the project

The ICS-UL team will coordinate Enhancing active citizenship. In addition to this, members of the ICS team will be involved in the development of Health and well-being, where they will collaborate in a comparative study on Social Engagement and Participation. Finally, members of the ICS-UL team will be involved in the development of Social support and long-term care. Given its role in the coordination of Enhancing active citizenship, the ICS-UL team will also collaborate in Management and Dissemination and knowledge transfer.

Short profile of all personnel and previous relevant experience

Amílcar Moreira (PhD in Social Policy, 2006) is a Post-Doctoral Fellow at ICS-UL. His research revolves around ageing, welfare reform and, more recently, attitudes towards the welfare state. He was part of a group that undertook the ESF’s Forward Look on ‘Ageing, Health and Pensions in Europe’. He will act as the coordinator of Enhancing active citizenship.

Amílcar will collaborate with Dr. Mikel Barslund at CEPS, in the development of a comparative study on how demographic ageing can impact on the distribution of policy preferences (Task 1), and also on a comparative study on the patterns of active citizenship (Task 3). In addition to this, he will oversee the work of Post-Doctoral Fellow 1, in the development of a study on the best-practices in promoting the civic and political participation of senior citizens (Task 5). Finally, he will oversee the work of Research Assistant 2 in the development of a study on social engagement and participation older people with diseases, disability and frailty –Task 2, Health and well-being.

Karin Wall (PhD in Sociology) is a Research Professor at ICS-UL. Her areas of interest include changes in demographic and family structures, and family policies in Europe. She is a member of the Committee of Experts on Social Policy for Families and Children, and coordinates the ESA Research Network Sociology of Families and Intimate Lives. She will be involved in the development of Social support and long-term care, where she will oversee the work of Post-Doctoral Fellow 2.

Cícero Roberto Pereira (PhD in Experimental Social Psychology, 2007) is a Research Fellow at ICS-UL. His research revolves around the analysis of legitimising processes of discrimination against minority groups. He has a track record in the use of experimental, and longitudinal methods. He will coordinate the team that will develop a study trying to identify mechanisms that allow us to overcome the negative stereotypes about senior citizens that hamper their prospects for active citizenship – Task 4, Enhancing active citizenship. Here, he will oversee the work of Research Assistant 1.

Rui Costa Lopes (PhD in Social Psychology, 2009) is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at ICS-UL. His research is focused on social attitudes and intergroup relations. He has been involved in the development and analysis of international surveys such as the ISSP, ESS and EVS. He is part of the team that will develop a study trying to identify mechanisms that allow us to overcome the negative stereotypes about senior citizens that hamper their prospects for active citizenship – Task 4, Enhancing active citizenship.

Pedro Alcântara da Silva (PhD in Sociology, 2010) is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at ICS-UL. His research revolves around the Sociology of Ageing, and the Sociology of Communication and Media. He has recently lead a study on the portraying of the health system by the Portuguese media. As part of the team responsible for Task 4 in Enhancing active citizenship, he will conduct an analysis of prejudices portrayed by informational media in the UK and Portugal.

Post-Doctoral Fellow 1 will be involved in the development of a study which aims to identify best-practices in promoting the civic and political participation of senior citizens – Task 5, Enhancing active citizenship. She will have a PhD in political science, public policy, sociology or a related topic, and be experienced on issues related with governance and participative democracy and in the development of case-studies.

Post-Doctoral Fellow 2 will be involved in the team responsible for the development of Social support and long-term care. S/he will have a PhD in social policy, sociology or a related topic. S/he will have experience on issues related with ageing and care, and in the analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data.

Research Assistant 1 will assist in the collection of informational media and in the running of experiments in Task 4, Enhancing active citizenship. She will have a BSc in social psychology, sociology or a related topic.

Research Assistant 2 will assist in the development of a study on social engagement and participation older people with diseases, disability and frailty – Task 2 of Health and well-being. She will have a Master economics, sociology or a related topic, and have experience in the analysis of quantitative data
